It was just a few months ago when 14-year-old Harrison Springs of Charlotte, North Carolina, was diagnosed with cancer. In May 2020, Harrison learned he had lymphoma. His cancer diagnosis and treatment program have had a profound effect on the entire Springs family. They have to try to stay away from other people to avoid germs and other illnesses that they could pass along to Harrison. His mother, Kimberly, has put her teaching career aside to concentrate her efforts on caring for her son. Meanwhile, Harrison’s brother, Carson, has required counseling to deal with the anxiety surrounding his brother’s cancer.
Harrison’s faith in God has helped him to stay positive and brave. He has chosen to learn as much as he can about his condition and therapy and to go full force with his treatment and nutrition to fight his cancer. At times, he has even encouraged his family and friends with written statements of hope and inspiration.
Just like any average 8th grade student, Harrison hopes to complete his schoolwork for this year and to graduate to 9th grade. In addition to his academic goals, Harrison wants to finish strong with his remaining chemotherapy and nutrition treatments. He also enjoys playing the guitar and would like to continue his music lessons.
Harrison feels blessed to have a wonderful family who has been so supportive of him throughout his fight. As he and his family continue to stay positive, Harrison hopes other pediatric cancer patients will do the same. “Stay positive and continue to pray to stay hopeful and encouraging,” Harrison advises.
